Working Out While Social Distancing

There are people who didn’t bat an eye when their gym closed in efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19. But, we aren’t of that variety, are we?

When my YMCA closed for 2 weeks, I legitimately gasped loud enough for my husband to ask what was wrong! Now, I realize this shutdown is not only critical, but will certainly last much longer than 2 weeks.

Look, we both know there are more alarming issues regarding this pandemic than our workout routine. But, when exercise is a major stress relief, and high priority, you need a solution.

This post covers how to deal with working out while social distancing, so you don’t lose your fitness, or your mind!

Master Your Mindset

As with anything, your mindset determines your experience. Here are a few ways to put a positive spin on such a weird and anxious time.

It’s temporary

This feels endless without knowing a date, or even month, we will be back to our normal routines. But, no matter how long, this is not forever. You know this, but it seriously helps to keep reminding yourself of it. At some point, we will be back to our regular schedule, and this feeling will be but a blip of a memory.

Look for new opportunities and break old habits

Gretchen Rubin talks about the benefits of the Strategy of a Clean Slate, saying,

The Clean Slate is so powerful that it’s a shame not to exploit it, and by making ourselves conscious of times of beginning, we can harness these crucial moments of opportunity to forge new and better habits

Gretchen Rubin

Take this uprooting of nearly all of your normal habits and routines, to discover where you can make positive changes. You no longer have the distractions of going out or doing most things out of habit.

Think about how you’re normally spending your time, especially how you exercise, and if it’s what you enjoy. If you always go to yoga on Wednesday nights, is it really a time that works best for you? Do you love the teacher? The way you feel when you’re on your way to class? Can you get by spending less time in the gym, and more time simply being active?

I have seen SO many more runners out. And, I wonder if they picked it up again after they stopped doing it because they, “didn’t have time”, or if they never even considered running until now.

YouTube

If you don’t use YouTube for workouts, I hate to break it to you, but you’re doing it wrong! There is every type of workout imaginable, and so many styles of instructors you will definitely find a few favorites to subscribe to.

Create your own playlists so you don’t have to search for the type workout you want. Do what makes sense for you; Cardio, Strength, 20 minutes and less, 30 minutes and longer, yoga, etc. Here’s how to do that:

Find the video you want to save, and hit the plus sign/SAVE option.

Here, you will be given the option to save to a current playlist, or create a new one. Select “Create New Playlist” and enter your category (i.e. Cardio), and select “Create”.

Live Workouts

So many amazing fitness pros out there are hosting Live workouts on both Facebook and Insta. Look for your favorite studios and instructors to see what’s going on on their socials. If you’re a member of the Y, they are offering streaming workouts from their instructors: YMCA 360

Don’t forget to go to the Simply Well Coaching Facebook page for live 10 minute Tabata on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 2pm EST!

Equipment you’ll want

You definitely don’t need much, a yoga mat will cover you, but if you’ve been considering investing in more, now is the time!

Honestly, you don’t need much to do an effective workout routine if you don’t have a gym. Here are the items I routinely use at home:

Yoga mat – they’re great for more than just yoga, kinda like yoga pants!

Resistance bandsthey are cheap, and take up very little space

Dumbbells – either get a light, medium, and heavy set, OR splurge on a set of changeable weights. This way, they take up the space of one set of weights, but can quickly be set to the desired weight. If you regularly workout at home, the Bowflex Selecttech I linked to are so very worth every penny!

Interval timer app – So many options, I use Interval Timer ++

Let’s be honest, if working out is important enough to you that you are reading tips on how to fit it in during a freaking pandemic, this will not be the thing that derails you.

Take a breath, try to enjoy this change in routine, and know that you won’t lose irreplaceable fitness in the meantime. Hey, you aren’t an Olympic athlete who has to wait another year!
