Essential Nursery Items for First-Time Parents
Your baby’s nursery is the heart of many of your childcare activities, from bedtime to feeding to diaper changes, and everything in between. This is the room you’ll be spending a lot of time raising your little one. Because of this, it’s crucial it’s equipped with everything you need before you even bring baby home.
Here are some essential nursery items for first-time parents to remember as they plan for their little one’s arrival.
A Secure Crib
No nursery is complete without a comfortable place for your baby to sleep. It’s likely the first thing you picture when you hear, “nursery”. However, you can’t trust just any crib to keep your baby safe and comfy while you get some much-needed rest.
Find a model with good reviews that seems sturdy when you test it, and passes safety ratings. Check out Safety.com for up-to-date ratings on infant/toddler products. As your child gets older, they may find ways to push this product to its limits. Finding the right crib now can save you from having to buy a new one later.
Full disclosure, we completely bypassed a crib purchase. We lived in Chicago and Owen’s room was pretty small and our whole place lacked storage space. I knew we would need a portable crib for trips, so why not use it for his full time bed?
A nice crib can be hundreds of dollars, and then there are the accessories you need to make it comfortable for a newborn through toddler. Our deluxe Pack ‘N Play came with a newborn bassinet level and changing area so we haven’t had to buy anything other than a mattress when he was over a year old.

A Sturdy Changing Table
You’ll want to make several considerations when choosing the right changing table—most notably its capacity for safety and security. Since your baby will have free range of motion while you’re changing them, the table must be securely fastened to the flat surface beneath it. Otherwise, you risk your baby tipping it over or falling out as you’re using it. The product you pick should come equipped with strong and reliable safety straps.
Luckily, there are so many styles that you can easily find one that fits your nursery’s decor. Some even come as a dresser and changing table in one for families with limited space.
A Dim Night-Light
No matter how good of a sleeper your baby is, you will be up in the middle of the night at many points early on. When that happens, the last thing you want is to fumble around in the dark and potentially injure yourself. Keep a small nightlight plugged in to dimly illuminate the nursery. Just be sure you don’t purchase one that’s too bright, or it may hinder your baby’s sleeping patterns.
A Glider/Rocking Chair
In the newborn and infant phase you’ll be in that chair a lot, so make sure it’s something that’s comfortable and goes with the room. Once your little one is a toddler, you’ll be sitting in it together, so size counts! Personally, I think this is something worth splurging on because sinking into a cozy chair at 1am, 2am, 3am, etc. is so crucial!
